Cyclones inch closer to a playoff spot beating the Elmira Sugar King

LISTOWEL, ON- The Listowel Cyclones delivered a dominant 5-2 victory over the Elmira Sugar Kings on February 7th at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena. With 1,233 fans packing the stands, the energy was electric as the Cyclones continued their push towards the postseason.

The first period was a tight battle, with neither team finding the back of the net. But in the second, the Cyclones broke the deadlock with an unassisted goal from Jack O’Donnell. Moments later, Cam McNevan extended the lead at 17:38, with Benson Moore and Jordan Visneskie providing the assists. Elmira responded with a goal of their own. Just before the buzzer, Wylie Birkett netted his 20th goal of the season on the power play at 19:59. That goal would be assisted by Cam McNevan and Aiden Renaud. That’s Renaud’s 20th assist of the season.

In the third, the Sugar Kings cut into the lead, but the Cyclones answered back when Colton Henderson buried a goal, assisted by McNevan, making it 4-1. The final goal of the night came from Jordan Visneskie, who capitalized on a power-play opportunity with an assist from Renaud, sealing the 5-2 win.

Between the pipes, Ethan Kowatch was solid, turning away 23 shots to backstop the victory. With the playoffs approaching, the Cyclones are inching closer to clinching a spot as they aim to defend their 2024-25 Sutherland Cup title.

Following the game, fans had the chance to take to the ice for a Skate with the Cyclones, capping off a memorable night for the community.

The Cyclones hit the road for back-to-back matchups, facing the KW Siskins on Sunday and the Stratford Warriors on Monday. They return home to host the Sarnia Legionnaires on Friday, February 21st, with puck drop at 7:30 PM.
